For decades, people with disabilities have been calling on the public transit industry to improve accessibility and inclusion, and the transit and mobility industry has been working hard and spending billions to address community concerns. And while progress has been made, challenges persist.

Disabled people cite the lack of accessible mobility as a significant barrier to equal community access. Some barriers and challenges include:

  • Getting information about available transportation options

  • Knowing which option is right for which trip

  • Independently using mobile apps and websites

  • Safely navigating to and from transportation services and within the community

  • Having access to the products and services that meet their transportation and accessibility needs

  • Being able to pay for transportation

 

Public transit agencies and mobility providers face challenges that include:

  • Understanding and addressing Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and regulations is time-consuming and detailed work.

  • Balancing legal requirements and the varying needs of different groups of people with different types of disabilities and access needs is challenging.

  • Building collaborative relationships with local advocates and disability community groups can be difficult.
